So far this season, underdogs are a 68-60-3 ATS and covering at more than 53 percent. However, it’s been these three teams doing most of the damage as dogs:
Dallas Cowboys (7-1 ATS, 3-0 ATS as underdogs)
The Cowboys have been a surprise success story in 2016 after many thought the season was lost when Tony Romo went down in the preseason. In stepped Dak Prescott and off ran Ezekiel Elliot, and Dallas is suddenly the top team in the NFC and crushing the spread in the process, including three ATS wins as pups. The Cowboys may not find themselves getting to points too often in the second half of the schedule but are field goal underdogs in Pittsburgh this coming Sunday. That +3 is tempting considering how bad the Steelers looked in Week 9.
New Orleans Saints (5-2-1 ATS, 4-0-1 ATS as underdogs)
High-powered offense has pushed the Saints into the black, despite a 4-4 SU record. New Orleans is actually a home favorite in Week 10, giving the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos 1.5 points. The Saints are 2-2 SU and ATS inside the Superdome with those two losses coming early in the season, before the team found its stride.
Atlanta Falcons (6-3 ATS, 5-0 ATS as underdogs)
The NFC South is the home to hungry dogs, with the Falcons floating a perfect 5-0 ATS mark as pups this season. Atlanta has tackled some very stiff competition in the first nine weeks of play too, taking on Oakland, New Orleans, Carolina, Denver, and Seattle – four of which, save the Seahawks, lost outright when giving the Falcons points. Atlanta opened as a 1-point road dog at Philadelphia for Week 10, but that line has swung to a pick’em. Whether it jumps the fence to Atlanta -1 remains to be seen, but either way the Falcons are legit contenders and proven breadwinners for NFL bettors.
