The New York Islanders will make the trek to Pittsburgh to face the Penguins for the third time this season.
The Islanders beat the Penguins both times by scores of 5-1 and 5-4, respectively.
The Islanders are coming off a crushing 6-2 loss to the Boston Bruins on Saturday. It was their fourth loss in five games.
New York did not stand a chance in this game. They were down 3-0 heading into the second period. Kyle Palmieri started the second period scoring with a goal, but the Bruins went on to score three straight second-period goals.
Boston only shot 27 times in this game but scored on over 22% of their shots.
The Penguins are coming off a 5-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils. New Jersey was not shy about shooting the puck and finished with 43 shots. The game was tied at one after the first period, but the Devils scored two goals (one on the power play and one shorthanded) in the second period.
The Devils followed that up with two third-period goals.
This game will be close. The odds are not for it yet, but I would expect the Penguins to have a slight edge. Pittsburgh will be playing at home for the first time since coming off a four-game road trip. They went 2-2-0 over that road trip but are a lot better at home.
The Penguins have a home-ice advantage, but they are also playing a little better than the Islanders. Offensively, they are significantly stronger and average 2.6 more shots per game.
They also have a much better power-play unit. If that is not enough, I will add this. The Penguins are coming off a mediocre road trip, but the Islanders have lost four of their last five.
They are struggling a little bit right now, which improves the Penguins’ chances of winning. Bet on Pittsburgh.
My Prediction: Penguins 3, Islanders 2
It's a hockey night in Pittsburgh! 🏒
