The Detroit Pistons will travel west to face the Los Angeles Clippers. The Pistons are rebuilding and having a difficult season. They are 3-12 and on a four-game losing streak.
Conversely, the Clippers are having a better season but not playing excellent basketball. Los Angeles is 8-7 and in ninth place in the Western Conference.
The Pistons’ most recent loss came against the Toronto Raptors. Detroit was without Cade Cunningham, which hurt them tremendously. They were down by 11 heading into the fourth quarter and made a run when it mattered most. They outscored Toronto 34-27 in the fourth, but that was not enough.
The Pistons ended up losing 115-111. Detroit turned the ball over 19 times in this game and only had 23 team assists. Even though they lost, there were a few bright spots. Rookie Jaden Ivey led the Pistons with 21 points and threw in eight assists. Ivey drew a lot of fouls and went 8-10 from the free-throw line.
The Clippers also lost their previous game. They battled with the Dallas Mavericks and lost in a heartbreaking fashion. The Mavericks built a 25-point lead, but Los Angeles fought back and had a chance to win it. However, a late Luka Doncic three-pointer put the Mavericks up by four with 27 seconds left. The Mavericks ended up winning 103-101.
Paul George led the Clippers with 23 points and had two steals. George was a perfect 8-8 from the line. Nicolas Batum also played huge minutes off the bench and scored 22. Batum could not miss and went 7-7 from three-point range.
The Clippers lost on Tuesday but will win today. They are playing at home, facing a Pistons team without Cade Cunningham and Isaiah Stewart, and have a superior defense. The Clippers have a top-five defense and are only allowing 106.9 points per game. In this age of fast-paced, high-scoring basketball, this is very impressive.
I cannot say the same for the Pistons. Detroit is giving up 118.2 points per game, the second-most in basketball.
The Pistons are not known for having a strong defense, but the loss of Cade Cunningham may be larger issue. Cunningham is averaging 19.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 6.0 assists. His impact on this team is significant, and his absence put themes at a huge disadvantage.
My Prediction: Clippers 108, Pistons 101
