Los Angeles Lakers vs Memphis Grizzlies betting preview | News Article by inspin.com

Ever since Ja Morant went on national television to proclaim that he’s "fine in the West" the Western Conference has done a tremendous job proving him wrong, both in terms of the standings and the overall talent level.

That interview aired on December 21st, 2022 on ESPN. Since then, Memphis has a record of 17-12.

More specifically, they’re 11-8 against other Western Conference teams. Since January 20th, they’re just 3-6 against the West.

Also since that interview, both Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant have headed west to form new star groupings with the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns respectively.

A bunch of other Western Conference playoff hopefuls also made significant moves to improve their title chances while the Grizzlies most stood pat.

Memphis still find themselves in the second seed in the conference, but the teams behind them are steadily inching closer with the sixth-seed Dallas Mavericks just five games behind in the standings.

On Tuesday, February 28th, they’ll take on one of those vastly improved teams in the Los Angeles Lakers. Since their last matchup, the Lake Show has acquired D’Angelo Russell, Jarred Vanderbilt, Malik Beasley, Mo Bamba, and Rui Hachimura to flesh out the supporting cast around LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

With the All-Star break giving their aging stars a much-needed reprieve, LA should be ready to go all-in on a playoff push with just 22 games remaining and a current game-and-a-half gap between them and the 10th-seed, or the last bid for the Play-In Tournament.

The Lakers have won two straight games with their new configuration, a roster that is seemingly much better suited to play off of their stars’ strengths.

Los Angeles now suddenly has a viable amount of shooters to space the floor for LeBron and AD to do their best work inside the paint, while also having the defensive bodies necessary to complement their two veteran scorers.

While the Memphis Grizzlies are still a head or so above the Lakers in terms of depth, the parity in the Western Conference is suddenly much stronger than it was just a month ago.

This matchup will be a strong indication and litmus test to see what separates the true contenders in the West from the pretenders. If Memphis isn’t able to pull off a convincing victory against the currently 13th-seeded Lakers, it would be further evidence that the Western Conference Finals berth is the Denver Nuggets’s to lose.
